1500 points Daemons vs the NEW Space Wolves Empty
PostSubject: Re: 1500 points Daemons vs the NEW Space Wolves   1500 points Daemons vs the NEW Space Wolves Empty3/11/2009, 6:07 pm

I let Mark take the first turn under the blissful assumption it wouldn't make much difference... I was wrong lol!

Both Rune priests fired off a neat psychic power that causes enemy models deepstriking within 24" of the model that cast this Tempest type spell to take a difficult terrain test when the drop in; deepstriking models regard difficult terrain as dangerous (oh noes!) and they move as if its difficult terrain till the space wolf turn (which is quite pointless if you ask me)

So when my daemons dropped in from Daemonic assault (with the Grinder, Masque, Bloodletters, Daemonettes and screamers elected as the first half), they ran into a few problems...
The Daemonettes landed beautifully just ahead of the space wolves but within 24" of an offending priest: 6 died from the tempest at first i thought it was on a 1 or 2 they take a wound, i've recently checked and i'm wrong: its just on 1s- oops!

The Grinder tried to plop in behind the predator, which had a tactical marine squad beside it but....... SCATTERED OFF THE BOARD No and deepstrike mishap allowed Mark to put the Grinder down where he liked, which for effect, put the grinder facing away from his longfangs, eagerly awaiting their chance to put holes in it, but he placed it so it was JUST inside his tempest's range to try and immobilize it via dangerous terrain, i just scraped a 2, when a 1 would of effectively took out the grinder given its position.

Bloodletters now knew how far the field went exactly and aimed to strike just outside its range. They scattered straight into it but only lost 2 to the tempest's disturbance

The Screamers dropped just outside its range and stayed put, eyeing the dreadnought hungrily.

The Masque had the fortune to not scatter, having landed not far from the longfangs whom were sat on top of difficult terrain and she took a wound from her rough landing thanks to the tempest.

Shooting:
Eager to get the longfangs out of their little difficult terrain cradle, the Masque forced the Longfangs, tactical squad with the plasma gun, and lesser Rune Priest dance to the tune of the Lord of Excess, managing to hit all 3 respectively, and making the Longfangs throw themselves skip & pirouette 5" forward, disrupting their camping plans, the tactical squad jumped backwards 3" but the mini-priest being a wizened grump only shuffled 1" forward.
The bloodletters ran forward through the puny difficult terrain brought on by the tempest 5" up to several (tiny) foot away from the longfangs, blood was going to be spilt...
The Daemonettes were good as banished so they fleeted onto the hill, in vain hopes that the icon bearer would live to have support drop in without scattering.
The Grinder i was clever with and had it fleet towards the enemy line in order to get its 11AV back armour away from the Space wolves' feral eyes, also closer to the enemy themselves.

Assault:
Deepstrike in normal 40k doesn't allow assault when you come in that way for Daemons....

Turn 2:
Movement:
Nothing really

Shooting:
This is where most of the action was: the entire shebang culminated in the bloodletters getting rapid fired by the tactical squad, 2 mini-priests with their plasma pistols, 2 frag missiles and a heavy bolter- it cut the bloodletters down from 8 to 3 by the time they were done.
Longfangs can split their fire as long as the Bloodfang leader is alive, the Grinder found himself being targeted by the las cannon, but the shot missed (how do you miss something that big coming towards you!?) and a krak missile, which glanced but soul grinders' are that used to being shaken around and stunned, so the shot did nothing.
The other tactical squad just rapid fired into the daemonettes and they got blown into little meaty chunks by bolter-fire, much to the delight of the marines having got such an easy squad kill.
And to top it off, a heavy bolter loaded some pot-shots at my screamers, but failed to do anything.
The terminators also had a go with their storm bolters and assault cannon, no luck in killing any of the 3 screamers.
The Bjorn dread wasn't going to sit idle and his assault cannon managed to riddle one with assault cannon slug/bullets and kill it.
A big-daddy runepriest hiding in some ruins could see the screamers and hurled his Living Lightning at the screamers (d6 hits at S7 AP5) 2 hits laters the lightning danced around the Screamer's warped 'flesh' without harm.

Assault:
None

My turn:
Mark forgot to fire off another Tempest Twisted Evil
The Lord of Change managed to strike in, and he used the Bloodletter's icon to get in
The Horrors also came in and used the icon
But the prince and flamers failed epically...

Movement:
The Masque skipped over next to the Longfangs ready to erm, dirty dance with the Canines of the Wolf.
The bloodletters though diminished in size ran headlong towards the tactical marines, the urge to kill practically overspilling.
Screamers undaunted by the dread nailing a screamer, swooped forward to prise open the dreadnought's armoured sarcophagus.
Soul grinder also plodding forward looking for some action, any action.

Shooting:
Lord of Change could peer over a boulder and spied one of the big-daddy runepriests, grinning it daemonic gaze'd him, this wounded him despite the cover save due to being obscured, and managed to finish him off with a crippling Bolt of Change, which melted the priest into nothing.
Horrors just for teh lulz used their warpfire and bolt of change upgrade to attack the Longfangs, but only killed 1 fang.
The Soulgrinder almost heaved up a ball of phlegm but decided against it and instead breathed fire on the tactical marines, which i think was aimed at the priest in order to catch the tactial marines. Either way nothing died from that attack.

Assault:
The Masque launched herself at the longfangs, who reacted by enveloping her and trying to unscrew her head and then crushing it like a well groomed melon, her attacks did bugger all, and the lord wasn't much better (wait, didn't he deepstrike this turn? Or have i missed a turn of stuff?? but at least did get 2 kills, the longfangs attacks did nothing.
Bloodletters, this was tasty; even with 3 letters plus herald who had took 1 wound in the shooting storm previously managed to hammer 8 space marines down in the one turn of assault, and taking no casualties, which left the marines thinking to themselves 'wibble' cue a -9 Ld test (from Ld8) they just managed to run away from the bloodletters (furious charge I bonus doesn't apply to sweeping advances) 4"
The Screamers barreled straight into the venerable dread's face, which the dread saw coming and swung its massive piston powered claw forwards but the swing fell short and the screamers found their mark- tearing into the dread's legs and crippling them, also delivering a heavy shock to the pilot within (stunned), locked in combat, the screamers were surely doomed, with terminators looming over them.
And of course good ol' grinder didn't want to miss the action and so charged straight into the wolf lord mini-runepriest type thing and delivered swift death from its piston powered grip.

Turn 3:
Mark remembered to fire off his tempest spells to make it risky for me to deepstrike anywhere near his big-daddy (main) rune priests
Movement:
Mark's predator crew sensing they were needed rumbled forward so they could get a clear shot at the grinder with the las cannon
Because Space marines don't have time to run away from a battle, the 3 man tactical squad's 'And They Shall know No Fear' kicked in which allowed them to consolidate immediately.
The terminators plodded forwards to help the poor bloody dread, wolf claws crackling with menace (assuming they're very special lightning claws that is)

Shooting:
The 3 man squad who had recently jigged backwards to get out of combat fired into the bloodletters with pistols and managed to take another bloodletter out and dealt another wound to the herald.
Due to the sheer mass of the grinder the predator could get a clear shot despite the dreadnought being between it and the grinder, the twin-linkedness planted a glancing hit on the grinder, which also did nothing.
The runepriest stalking the ruins got a mental bead on the bloodletters and fired out his living lightning at the bloodletters, poor rolling only gave him 1 shot, which did manage to kill a bloodletter- it was just the herald and standard bearer now from that squad.

Assault:
mark had a tough time deciding whether he wanted to rescue his venerable dread from the screamers or exercise his chainfist on the grinder (which was 1 of his weapons that had a realistic chance of downing it) but chose to help the beleaguered dreadnought, the sergeant of that squad being faster then them all brought his sword round in a diagonal swing and killed off a screamer, his squad and the dread trying to get the last screamer but it dodged around the hits. The screamer took its Ld test and it was dragged down by irate wolves in Tactical Dreadnought (terminator) armour; the Terminator's wishes to punch the Screamer's tiny kidneys had been granted.
Meanwhile, the Longfangs continued their fight against the Masque and Lord of Change, the Masque was useless again but the Lord did have more luck, reaping another 2 of the Longfangs, which caused the Bloodfang's nerve to just about crack enough to initiate a retreat tactical withdrawal which it somehow evaded the I 7 Masque and ran 5" back up the hill with his tail between his legs.
the surviving tactical marines decided to steal the charge from the bloodletter and herald, this proved fatal as the herald chopped into them with the standard bearer landing the final killing blow despite hitting at the same time as the marines did but failing to do anything.

my turn:
At last the Daemon prince managed to get onto the board and i plonked him behind the predator, and by gum he came dangerously nearly scattered off the board! the tempest failed to wound him.
The flamers also came in and i took a gamble with them, putting them within a couple (tiny) feet away from the backs of the full tactical marine squad near the predator, and they managed to land perfectly, cue 3 rolls of 3s so no tempest wounds.

Movement:
The Masque not willing to let her dance partner get away ran up the hill after him at 4" due to the difficult terrain feature of the hill.
The Lord of change glided on his wings over towards the ruins where the rune priest was sat smugly safe from most retaliation. He had a way to go before assault though.
The bloodletters spent their movement phase chuckling at the fact that the tactical marines stopped running to shoot, more offering to Khorne was about to be delivered...
The Grinder had seen the terminators mangle the screamers and it thought nothing of it, it rampaged forward to meet them in battle.
The horrors hopped skipped and jumped towards where the action was taking place in the middle of the board.

Shooting:
My favourite part was when the flamers pumped gallons of warping flame into the backs of the full tactical marine squad, reducing it to a puny 3 man squad and immobilizing the predator in 1 shooting phase (but forgot to take a morale test from 25% casualties from shooting, ah well, it was approaching time to pack up and we had to really hurry)
The grinder spat his phlegm at the terminators and the shot somehow managed to come backwards and at an angle towards the bloodletters, just landing in front of them. Its harvester gun did nothing to the thick terminator armour.
The lord demonic gazed and bolt of change'd the terminators... It was a tough choice whether he wanted to go with the sergeant's 4+ invulnerable save instead of the normal 5+ invulnerable save, he chose the latter and rolled a 4 for the 5+ terminator! Ouch
The horrors randomly used their bolt of change and warpfire on the bloodfang but the bolt missed and the fire washed over his robust 3+ armour without harm.

Assault:
The Soul Grinder couldn't resist and bulldozed straight into assault with the terminators, followed closely by the Herald of Khorne and standard bearer. The herald being faster swung his sword in an arc while the juggernaut used its sheer mass and momentum to pound the wolf claw wielding terminator into the floor, followed by the sergeant with powersword, the Grinder was barely able to break the chainfist wielding terminator in half to stop it from cutting it into pieces like a chef chops up stew meat. The surviving terminators pummeled the standard bearing bloodletter into a red patch, the powerfist missed the grinder. They lost the round but they were there to stay as far as morale was concerned.
The masque managed to get lucky in her tussle with the bloodfang, scoring 2 rending hits which quickly ended his life, the Masque had finally killed something!

Turn 4:
Movement:
Mark's other surviving tactical squad was in shock at what had just happened but they quickly got over it and ran back to make the Flamers pay dearly

Shooting:
angry at what had just happened to their battle brothers, the tactical marines rapid fired at the flamers but poor to hit rolls and poor wound rolls let the flamers get off easy, much to the dismay of the tactical marines.
Having been immobilized by the flamer's changing flames, the predator crew swung their las cannon around to put a burning hole where the daemon prince's head should be and the shot did hit on the re-roll but the prince's 5+ invulnerable save stopped the shot...

Assault:
The herald used his superior speed (ever been up next to a raging daemonic mechanical bull/rhino?) to get the drop on the terminators, offing 2 more terminators, leaving the powerfist termie alive; for about 2 seconds when the Grinder's attacks hit home and pasted him...

My turn:
It was time to pack up so this was truly a speed turn!
Movement:
The Daemon prince vaulted over towards the ruins where the final rune priest was hiding
Lord of Change cut off his only escape route
The Masque hopped around a bit randomly in celebration for her/its Lord Slaanesh

Shooting:
The flamers (either finished off or reduced the tactical squad to 1 man), stunned the predator though

Assault:
The Daemon prince leapt into close combat with the rune priest and thanks to Noxious touch, the priest died on the charge, causing no damage to the prince due to superior speed
The herald randomly charged the back of the immobilized dreadnought and managed to destroy it cheers

The Lord having been balanced on the ruins by me fell off and when i tried to pick him up to pack him away, his base came off! affraid Thought his wings might fall off or something, and as Zack knows, they are fiddly (my LoC is over 10 years old, his wings needed sticking back on and then there was a huge gap in between them which needed filling in with blu stuff)

I definitely won that one on the level of destruction i'd wrought on the sons of Lemen Russ. I said i'd blow them backwards into the underbrush, and i have Twisted Evil . But its worth mentioning he's never played against Daemons before, so didn't know that most of the models can and will give the opposing army a good pasting in assault. Then again i didn't know about his tempest spell thingy, which is an effective way to deter people deepstriking too close, in the Chaos Daemon's case it can/could be a very effective speed bump.

Phew, RSI is fun...

Special rewards

Stormy waters- The main runepriests for giving my daemons grief by casting their tempest power

crazed skinners- The bloodletters for demonstrating that they can do a heap of damage even at very low squad count

Most useless squad- The daemonettes (other then giving a squad of marines the joy of a garish shooting gallery)

Towering inferno- The grinder for not killing himself deepstriking and not being damaged so to speak

twin-linked fool!- The predator for despite unlucky rolls on Mark's part hit its intended targets with the re-roll
